On Saturday, December 14th, 48 curlers participated in the annual Newbie Spiel. The day started with on-ice instruction and warm-up, followed by two six-end games, a delicious lunch in-between and prizes to close out the fun day.
This was the first time the Newbie Spiel had a full draw, which is indicative of the number of new curlers who have been recently introduced to the sport. Seven of the players had never been on the ice before! There were 1st, 2nd and 3rd year curlers, curlers from the Orillia Parks and Recreation Learn to Curl program as well as a team from Elmvale. Curlers had the opportunity to move up to positions they had never played before.
The day was sponsored by Home Hardware, Eight Limb Yoga Studio, St. Louis Bar and Grill and Kelsey’s.
First place: Ed Connor, Sarah Connor, Cathy O’Shaughnessy, John McLean Second place: Charlene Ley, Peter Mochula, Randy Ley, Larry Jones Third place: Paul Ross, Liz Ross, Victor Rosa, Liz Rosa Fourth place: Don Kinzinger, Kurt Scheirich, Irene Scheirich, Shaunagh McParland-Kinzinger
The 50/50 Draw was $130 and won by Gerald Rotar. Everyone had a fantastic time and were very grateful to Wendy Bouwhuis who organized the day.
It's lots of fun, so hopefully you can make it.
